Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool that allows you to manage and deploy marketing tags (snippets of code or tracking pixels) on your website or app without modifying the code directly.
GTM works by placing a container snippet on your website or app. This container then loads all the tags you have set up in GTM. This setup enables you to manage tags from a web-based interface without needing to edit the code of your site directly.
Tags are pieces of code or tracking pixels that collect data or trigger actions. Examples include Google Analytics tracking codes, conversion tracking pixels, or marketing tags.
Triggers determine when and where tags should be fired. They are conditions or events that, when met, will cause the associated tag to execute. For example, a trigger might fire a tag when a user clicks a specific button or visits a particular page.
Variables are placeholders for dynamic values that can be used in tags and triggers. They help you capture information like page URL, user clicks, or form submissions.
To create a new tag, go to the GTM dashboard, click on “Tags,” then “New,” and follow the prompts to configure your tag. You’ll need to specify the tag type, configure the settings, and set up the triggers that determine when the tag should fire.
A GTM container is a snippet of code that you add to your website or app. It holds all the tags, triggers, and variables you create in GTM.
